Choose Option B
The fifth and final uncertainty flipping skill is the choice of option B. Directly building on Sheryl Sandberg's wonderful book Option B, I think that in moments of uncertainty, it's good to step back from it and ask yourself the question â what mindset am I approaching with here? It takes some strength and requires a growth mindset, but in this place of uncertainty, am I looking at opportunities? What could I do? How could it be done? Where could we go? The alternative is the catastrophic fixed mindset: What are the obstacles? What can't I do? What happened to the life I used to have?
It sounds naïve and simplistic but you have to create an option B. It's not about good or bad, success or failure, it just is. A lot of people this year have had to create an option B. They simply couldn't do life as they did before. You can sit there and have a little pity party for yourself but remember that this is simply your emotions catastrophising and it doesn't get you anywhere.
During lockdown I couldn't travel for work or appear in person at events, and it felt like everything might stop. When you have a family to provide for, bills to pay, a roof to keep over your head and you're not sure what you're dealing with, then it is a worrying time. But option B was there â I could do more online stuff. I could make the virtual world of work, work for me. I didn't know how at first. I did make many mistakes. But the business changed, and my work changed with it. Option B was a mindset. It's the opportunity versus the obstacles. If you start obsessing over the obstacles, you're going to soon find yourself in a downward spiral. If instead you start thinking, what are the opportunities here? then that is going to be a more exciting and positive experience. The energy feeds into how you feel and what you do.
This even goes for those very dire circumstances, including bereavement and loss. When Sheryl Sandburg is talking about the death of a loved one and how to deal with grief, she mentions that while you may not be able to have Option A, you can create an Option B. Of course, death is finite, and nothing will be the same after it, but with even this process or example, there can be an Option B. You absolutely cannot change the diagnosis/prognosis or situation, so you have to move forward with something different. It is one of the most serious examples of how you turn the initial response of fear of the future into recreating the life that goes on. Uncomfortable â certainly. Painful â definitely. Unavoidable â absolutely. Uncertainty in life can still be flipped on its head from fear and worry and pain to finding certainty, opportunity and growth.
